Jamaica Biennial 2017 – Juried Artists: nichola feldman-kiss

nichola feldman-kiss – an initial aversion to the plight of the sufferer (PietĆ ) (2017)

nichola feldman-kiss was a first time exhibitor at the National Gallery of Jamaica in the recently closed Jamaica Biennial 2017. She was born in Ottawa, Canada and is of Jamaican, German and Canadian descent. She is a graduate of the California Institute of Arts where she attained a MFA in Photography and another in Art and Critical Studies in 1996. Her work was featured in a solo exhibition entitled nicola feldman-kiss: Witness at the Ottawa Art Gallery in 2016. She will also be featured in the Imago Mundi Benetton Collection, Venice Biennale in 2017. feldman-kiss was granted the Canada Council for the Arts Media Arts International Residency in 2015. Her work in the Biennial, which features osteological specimens, offers a pointed critique of a globalized society where the powerless are discarded pawns amid international commercial interests, social upheaval, militarization and ensuing political gamesmanship. She lives in Ottawa.

The National Gallery of Jamaica is the oldest and largest public art gallery in the Anglophone Caribbean. It has a comprehensive collection of early, modern and contemporary art from Jamaica along with smaller Caribbean and international holdings. A significant part of its collections is on permanent view. The NGJ offers a range of educational services, included guided tours, lectures and panel discussions, and children's art programmes and also operates a gift shop and coffee shop.
