The National Visual Arts Competition and Exhibition is our annual cooperation with the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission.

Invitation – 2011 National Visual Arts Competition and Exhibition

The forty-eighth annual staging of the National Visual Arts Competition & Exhibition will take place on Sunday, July 17, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at the National Gallery of Jamaica.

Mrs. Kay Anderson, Lecturer at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts will deliver the feature address at the opening ceremony and declare the exhibition officially open to the public. The exhibition, which represents the combined efforts of the JCDC and the National Gallery, will feature 107 award winning works by experienced and emerging artists.

The art on display will include a new collection of award winning Jamaican photographs, drawings, paintings, videos, ceramics, collages, sculptures and mixed media works created by 76 artists.  The works have achieved medals, merit certificates, certificates of participation and sectional prizes.

The Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF), the Urban Development Corporation (UDC) and Claro have come back on board as sponsors of the programme.  The public will have the opportunity to select their favourite artwork to help determine the winner of the Viewers’ Vote Prize through text voting provided by Claro from July 17-30.

Interested persons can view the work at the National Gallery until August 20, Tuesdays to Thursdays -10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Fridays -10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on Saturdays between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Meanwhile, the Traveling Showcase across the island featuring the top awarded artworks from this year’s competition will begin on September 27 and culminate on December 9.

The National Visual Arts Competition and Exhibition, our annual collaboration with the JCDC, not only attracts medals and sectional prizes but also allows members of the public to cast their vote. Until last year, there was a single Viewer’s Vote, cast by means of paper ballots. This year, for the first time, there were two Viewer’s Votes: one for the medal winners, sponsored by Claro and operated with text voting; the second for the remaining works in the exhibition, sponsored by the Tourism Enhancement Fund and which uses the conventional ballot voting method. Prepare to submit work for the 2010 National Visual Arts Competition and Exhibition! The exhibition includes a youth section and selected participants are eligible for medal awards and sectional prizes. Categories accepted: ceramics, fibre arts, painting, photography, sculpture, assemblage, video art and works on paper. Entry forms will be available shortly.
